CROP RESEARCH DIRECTORATE

The Crop Research Directorate is responsible for leading crop-related research in the region. It oversees major research programs such as:

Cereal Crops Research Program, Pulse, Oil and Fiber Crops Research Program, Enset Research Program, Root and Tuber Crops Research Program, Fruit and Vegetable Crops research Program, Coffee, Spices and Tea Crops Research Program, Food Science and Post-Harvest Handling Program, Crop Protection Program and Breeder and Nucleus Seed Production Programs.

These programs manage diverse projects that have established to tackle regional crop production issues. Key areas of focus include:

  • Development and adaptation of crop production technologies, such as improved crop varieties and agronomic practices.
  • Integrated management of diseases, insects and weeds to ensure sustainable crop health and productivity.
  • Developing and promotion of improved food and nutrition, both by improving traditional dietary practices and by developing new, nutrient-rich recipes to enhance household nutrition.
  • Production of breeder and nucleus seeds for further research and to access planting materials for production of subsequent seed classes

The crop research directorate aims to address these issues through research, innovation, and collaboration with various national and international stakeholders.
