LIVESTOCK RESEARCH DIRECTORATE
Livestock Research Directorate focuses on improvement of production and productivity of major domestic animals, feed and health as crosscutting issues.
Projects under the Directorate include Beef & Dairy, Small ruminants, Feed and nutrition, Animal health, Poultry, Apiculture and fisheries and aquaculture
The major focus areas of the programs and projects of the directorate include:
- Dairy cattle breed improvement through crossbreeding and husbandry improvement
- Breed improvement of small ruminants (sheep and goat) through selection
- Adaptation and testing of exotic and crossbred poultry breeds while developing tools to conserve indigenous chicken eco-types
- Introduction, adaptation and testing of introduced improved forages accessions, lines and varieties
- Surveillance of economical livestock diseases; investigating diseases occurrence, dynamics and designing prevention and control strategies
- Organize review forum for completed researches, and preparation of extension packages from the completed researches accepted by the forum
- Study and identify livestock research and development loops that create job for youth & women, emerging cooperatives and investors
