The Source Technology Multiplication and Seed Research Directorate is one of the six research directorates under the Central Ethiopia Agricultural Research Institute. Its core mandate is to meet the regional demand for agricultural technologies by multiplying source technologies across various domains. These include:

  • Crop production: Cereals, pulses, root crops, and horticultural crops in different seed classes breeder, pre-basic, and basic
  • Livestock: Forage crops and improved breeds
  • Apiculture: Beekeeping technologies
  • Natural resources: Multiplication of multi-purpose trees, strains (bio-fertilizers), and vermi-worms.
  • In addition to multiplication efforts, the directorate conducts research on seed technologies aimed at enhancing seed quality and performance.

To further support agricultural innovation, the directorate is developing systems for multipliers and agricultural equipment that promote advanced startup technologies. It also focuses on strengthening the capacity of seed multiplier organizations through knowledge transfer and skill development.
